The access ports are conventional; the surrounding architecture is the purchase

The C9300-24P-E provides 24 gigabit PoE+ copper ports and an optional uplink module. It does not gain multigigabit access or higher PoE classes simply because those features exist elsewhere in the C9300 family.

Its reason to sit above a simpler access switch is the surrounding operating architecture. Uplink choices, replaceable components and coordinated stack operation can support a larger campus design. For a small standalone office that routes everything through a firewall, some of that value may go unused. The model should earn its place through a specific operational requirement rather than the expectation that a higher series number automatically improves every endpoint.

Uplink modularity supports a different growth path

Compatible modules include eight 10G ports or two 25G ports, among other choices. The base switch does not include a network module. This gives the closet a growth path that differs from a fixed-uplink C9300L, but it also makes the uplink hardware part of the initial cost and compatibility decision.

For traffic that stays on local access ports, a faster upstream module may change little. For aggregated AP traffic or transfers to another building, it can change the useful capacity of the closet. Cartennas would map that traffic boundary before choosing the module; maximum uplink speed is not an argument by itself.

Data and power stacks solve different failure problems

StackWise-480 coordinates the data stack. StackPower uses separate cabling and operating modes to share electrical capacity or reserve it for failures. A data-stack design does not automatically establish a power-sharing design, and the power stack need not have the same member grouping as the data stack.

The distinction changes how resilience is evaluated. Extra power consumed during normal operation is no longer spare capacity available after a supply fails. Likewise, a working stack control plane cannot keep an endpoint connected if the physical access member serving it is unavailable. The useful design starts with the failure the business intends to survive, then assigns the data and power mechanisms to that requirement.

Field reports put software maintenance in the buying decision

Operator discussions include both troublesome C9300 upgrades and routine upgrades across large fleets. The accounts involve different historical IOS XE builds and configurations, so they do not establish a single reliability score. They do show that software state and maintenance practice materially affect the experience of otherwise similar hardware.

Cisco’s current release recommendations should therefore inform the operating baseline alongside the features the site uses. A deployment depending on authentication, routing or stack behavior deserves a validation path that exercises those functions. The C9300 is most convincing where the organization can use its operational capabilities and maintain the software and failure procedures that give those capabilities practical value.

Cartennas assessment

Choose C9300-24P-E when the access layer needs more than a set of gigabit ports: a managed stack, adaptable uplinks and an explicit power-resilience design. Keep a simpler model on the shortlist where those features have no operational use. The stronger hardware architecture is worthwhile only when its maintenance and failure behavior are part of the deployment.
