Serviceability is its clearest hardware advantage

The MS350-24 has replaceable fans and supports dual hot-swappable power supplies. For a campus closet, that matters because some component failures can be addressed without immediately replacing the entire chassis. It gives an operating team more options than a fixed-fan access platform.

Those options still depend on prepared spares, accessible rack placement and an appropriate maintenance procedure. A replaceable component that is unavailable locally can leave the site waiting just as long as a chassis replacement. Cartennas values modularity most where the organization actually uses it to shorten recovery, rather than treating it as a specification with no supporting process.

The 24-port model is not the 24X

MS350-24 supplies 24 Gigabit copper connections and four SFP+ uplinks, without PoE. The MS350-24X is a separate variant with eight multi-gigabit interfaces and higher-power capabilities. A review of the family should not award those features to every chassis carrying the MS350 name.

For retained data-only connections, the selected model can still be sufficient. For a wireless refresh, it may leave both access speed and endpoint power unresolved. Before repurposing an old closet switch, check the next endpoint population. Reusing a familiar chassis is economical only if the additional adapters, injectors and operating work do not outweigh the saving.

Routing scale separates it from the smaller access tier

Cisco lists greater route and routed-client capacity for MS350 than MS250. The enforced learned-OSPF limit is 15,000 routes, compared with 900 on MS250. MS350 also provides a 160Gb aggregate stacking designation, compared with the smaller platform's 80Gb figure.

Those differences matter when traffic or route state genuinely crosses members or exceeds the smaller platform's role. They do not make one application twice as fast. A single endpoint link remains Gigabit, and its path may never traverse the stack. Compare normal and failure-state traffic, then decide whether the larger platform's resources are serving a real requirement.

A stable operating record can justify a measured transition

An owner participating in an MS390 discussion described four MS350 switches in distribution and access locations as trouble-free. Other classic-MS owners expressed similar satisfaction with their installed systems. These reports support the value of an understood deployment, while falling short of a controlled failure-rate comparison.

The corresponding decision is to preserve what works during the migration. Record routing, aggregation, authentication and client visibility before the change. A newer switch that has more capacity but breaks a necessary operating workflow is an incomplete replacement. The comparison should include how the team stages, upgrades and diagnoses the new platform.

Model-specific dates prevent an overly broad lifecycle claim

The exact MS350-24-HW reached end of sale on July 11, 2025, earlier than some other MS350 variants. Cisco lists support through August 8, 2030. The support deadline is therefore a planning constraint even if the installed hardware remains healthy.

Retain it where its serviceable campus role and Gigabit data interfaces still fit. Replace earlier when power, multi-gigabit access or another policy architecture is required. The strongest refresh plan combines the necessary endpoint change with a tested operating transition, instead of extending the old platform simply because it has been reliable.
