The copper ports are fast enough for some APs, not every multigigabit design

All 24 access ports support 1G/2.5G operation and 90W PoE capability. Four 25G uplinks and two 100G uplink/stack positions give the chassis a different aggregate profile from a basic gigabit edge switch.

The distinction is between access and concentration. The faster uplinks can carry traffic from many endpoints, but an individual copper connection still stops at 2.5G. This makes the model worth considering for an AP estate whose wired requirements fit that rate. A deployment explicitly requiring 5G or 10G access needs another port configuration even when the 4120’s aggregate uplinks look generous.

The per-port power rating is not the total budget

The internal supply provides a 680W PoE budget. Twenty-four illustrative 90W allocations would require 2,160W, far beyond that starting configuration. Even a much smaller high-power group can therefore make supply selection the deciding part of the purchase.

The electrical input also changes some expanded configurations. With the supported 1200W secondary supply, Extreme lists 1,380W of PoE at 100–120VAC and 1,540W at 200–240VAC. Buying the larger supply does not make the higher-voltage result available on a lower-voltage feed. The site’s actual electrical arrangement belongs in the equipment decision before the configuration is repeated across locations.

Stack ports and external uplinks have different jobs

The 4120 supports its specified eight-unit stacking arrangement through the QSFP28 positions. It does not cross-stack with the 4220 family. Allocating those ports to stacking also changes which high-speed paths remain available externally.

That is useful flexibility when the design has a clear need for a shared access stack. It is less useful to count the same ports simultaneously as full external uplinks and stack connections. Cartennas would evaluate the completed topology, including the traffic path after one link is unavailable, rather than treating all listed interface rates as independently available capacity.

Switch Engine and fabric attachment are not the same as native Fabric Engine

Extreme identifies the 4120 as a Switch Engine platform that can attach to its fabric environment. That should not be presented as a user-selectable native Fabric Engine persona. The distinction determines which configuration and operating procedures apply.

Administrator discussion around Extreme deployments likewise separates edge stacking from core fabric design and notes that the command environments differ. The buying consequence is straightforward: select the access hardware and operating role together. The 4120 is attractive when its combination of power, 2.5G ports and uplinks matches the edge requirement, without assigning it capabilities reserved for another platform.

Cartennas assessment

Shortlist 4120-24MW-4Y for powered access where 2.5G is sufficient and the installed power configuration meets the endpoint allocation. Its faster uplinks are useful for concentration, but they do not change the copper-port limit. Specify the feed voltage, supplies and Switch Engine operating role as part of the same purchase.
