The exact P model is ordinary gigabit PoE+ access
4220-48P-4X provides 48 gigabit copper ports with 30W PoE capability and four 1G/10G SFP+ interfaces. It should not inherit the multigigabit ports, higher PoE classes or small-model acoustic claims found elsewhere on the 4000-series page.
That conventional port mix can be a good fit for phones, workstations and other access devices. The model’s usefulness comes from providing the required density in an operating environment the team can maintain. If the endpoint requirement already includes multigigabit AP connections, the comparison needs a different 4220 variant or another switch rather than a broader reading of the family description.
Four SFP+ positions are shared between topology roles
The hardware guide identifies the SFP+ interfaces as uplink/stacking ports. A stack design therefore consumes positions that a standalone installation could use for external connections. The supported 4220 stack does not include 4120 members.
This makes the port allocation consequential at larger sites. Two interfaces committed to a stack leave a different external topology from four independent uplinks. Link aggregation can distribute multiple flows across the remaining paths, but it does not erase that allocation. Cartennas would compare the required normal and failure paths after every interface has a role, rather than quoting the maximum number of sockets as available uplinks.
PoE capacity and the secondary supply need an actual configuration
The rear panel includes the main AC input and a position for a redundant supply. Forty-eight 30W-capable ports represent 1,440W of possible maximum allocations, not a statement that the starting power configuration delivers that total.
The equipment order must identify the installed supplies and the required load after a source fails. A second supply can have a different practical purpose depending on whether its capacity is consumed in normal operation or reserved. This is particularly relevant in a dense phone or AP closet, where a switch can have enough data ports and still be constrained by the shared electrical budget.
Management simplicity depends on the selected operating scope
The 4000 family supports several management paths, while some capabilities apply only to selected models and software personas. Native Fabric Engine support on a family page should not be assumed for every 4220 SKU. The exact hardware and software support matrix must match the intended design.
Operator discussions of Extreme environments also emphasize the difference between a straightforward edge stack and a fabric core. That distinction gives this model a sensible role: dense, conventional access within a defined platform. It should be chosen because that role fits, not because a neighboring universal model’s features have been added to its specification by implication.

Choose 4220-48P-4X for a dense gigabit PoE+ access layer whose uplink, power and management requirements are settled. Select another variant when the endpoint needs faster copper or higher power. The strongest purchase is a complete access configuration, including its stack allocation and power reserve.
