The W ports solve a power requirement
The 48 copper ports support gigabit Ethernet and 90W PoE capability. That combination is useful when an endpoint needs substantial electrical power but does not need a multigigabit wired connection. It should not be confused with an MXW model that changes the access data rate as well.
This distinction can prevent an expensive mismatch in an AP project. A generous PoE class may allow a device to enable its intended functions, while a gigabit copper link still limits the network path. The power and data requirements have to be satisfied independently. A model that solves only one of them is not made complete by its faster fiber uplinks.
The supply configuration determines how many high-power devices fit
The chassis provides two unpopulated power-supply slots in the documented base configuration. Forty-eight illustrative 90W allocations would total 4,320W. That arithmetic describes the sum of per-port capabilities, not the power delivered by an unspecified pair of supplies.
The order therefore needs an endpoint allocation plan and compatible supplies that support it under the intended electrical and failure conditions. The modular arrangement makes a serviceable power design possible. It does not establish that design until the required parts and reserve have been selected. Uplink and universal positions remain separate choices
Four SFP28 uplinks support 1G/10G/25G, alongside two SFP-DD universal/stacking positions. The latter can have an Ethernet role under the documented configuration, but a port cannot simultaneously serve every advertised purpose.
This layout can give a high-power edge useful concentration capacity. The benefit depends on how the external links and stack are assigned. It also depends on the selected operating persona: Extreme documents the traditional stack under Switch Engine, while Fabric Engine changes the network architecture. Universal hardware is a platform choice, not a combined feature entitlement across both operating systems.
Security and service details should survive the quotation process
The hardware guide includes a specific MACsec support note for revision AC. The delivered revision therefore matters when encrypted links are part of the design. The same level of specificity belongs on the power supplies and cooling components.
Administrator discussions of the platform emphasize the learning and topology differences between its operating environments. That supports evaluating the final bill of materials together with the configuration the team will run. The 5420M’s advantage is the ability to build and maintain a well-defined high-power access system, rather than the existence of modular slots or a universal label in isolation.
