The exact W configuration is about power, not faster copper

5520-48W provides 48 gigabit ports with 90W PoE capability. The universal positions and VIM slot add topology choices around that access layer, but the copper ports remain gigabit.

This makes the model a candidate for devices whose electrical needs exceed ordinary PoE+ while their data path fits 1G. It is less persuasive for a new AP estate that explicitly requires 5G or 10G copper. The correct comparison starts with those two endpoint requirements separately, rather than allowing a high power class to stand in for overall port suitability.

The VIM choice determines the ordinary uplinks

The base hardware has an unpopulated VIM position. Extreme offers four-port 10G or 25G modules for that role. Selecting the module is therefore part of making the switch ready for its intended topology.

That modularity can support a future concentration change without replacing the access chassis. It also means the initial purchase must include the correct module, optics and software support. The available data-stack positions should be assigned separately from the VIM’s external connections. The completed link plan is more informative than a family diagram showing every optional interface at once.

Replaceable components make resilience configurable

The chassis has two power-supply positions and replaceable fan modules. A 48-port 90W capability does not establish the aggregate PoE budget or the load sustainable after a supply fails.

The useful power design identifies the normal endpoint allocations and the required surviving subset. If the second supply’s capacity is consumed during ordinary operation, it cannot also be counted as entirely unused reserve. The modular service arrangement is valuable when the organization selects the needed parts and maintains compatible spares. It provides options for service; it does not supply a finished failure policy automatically.

A documented mixed-stack issue changes the migration plan

Extreme’s support record for mixed 5520/5720 stacks identifies unsupported primary and backup role selection across different series. The supported mixed arrangement has specific role restrictions and uses V200 rather than the all-5720 V400 topology.

This is a concrete reason to treat a gradual hardware refresh as a design change. Adding a newer member does not make every leadership combination valid or transfer its fastest stack behavior to the whole group. The operating persona also matters: the documented traditional stack is a Switch Engine feature, while Fabric Engine is a separate architecture. Cartennas would preserve that distinction in the migration and replacement procedures, rather than presenting universal hardware as unrestricted mix-and-match operation.

Cartennas assessment

Choose 5520-48W when high-power gigabit access and configurable uplinks match the estate. Include the VIM, supplies and maintenance plan in the price comparison. For a mixed-generation refresh, establish the supported stack roles before installation; for multigigabit endpoints, choose the appropriate access model instead.
