The AC-F suffix specifies a complete cooling direction

The reviewed bundle includes two AC supplies and six fans, all with front-to-back airflow. The unsuffixed base model instead has empty power and fan positions, while the AC-R bundle reverses airflow.

That difference belongs in the purchase description because the three are not equivalent shipments. A cooling direction that conflicts with the rack layout can undermine an otherwise sensible aggregation design. Cartennas would keep the full suffix attached to replacement and spare orders, so a later substitution preserves both the electrical arrangement and the intended flow of air through the equipment.

The port mix supports concentration, with an explicit ratio

The chassis provides 48 1G/10G/25G SFP28 ports and eight 40G/100G QSFP28 ports. If all SFP28 ports operate at 25G, they represent 1,200Gbps of one-direction edge line rate; eight 100G links represent 800Gbps. That illustrative 1.5:1 concentration ratio precedes any ports assigned to other topology roles.

The ratio is not inherently a problem. Its suitability depends on traffic locality, concurrency and the remaining paths during failure. The model is attractive when that density matches the actual aggregation role. It should not be described as providing every lower-rate connection an independently unconstrained path to every upstream destination.

An optical link must recover without manual intervention

A firsthand 7520 operator reported generic active optical cables that could be made to run at 25G but needed manual speed changes after a disconnect or reboot. The same account found manufacturer DACs operated correctly, while other administrators reported successful third-party deployments.

That mixed evidence supports a specific buying conclusion: qualify the selected part and its recovery behavior, rather than assigning one verdict to all third-party optics. A link coming up once is weaker evidence than its returning to the intended state after interruption. The relevant bundle includes the switch software, optical encoding, far-end device and configuration, not only the cable’s printed speed.

Persona and model suffix also change the feature set

The non-E 48Y-8C model does not provide the MACsec capability of the separate 48YE-8CE variant. Under Switch Engine, supported QSFP28 positions can also be assigned to stacking; that traditional stack is not a Fabric Engine feature.

Those distinctions prevent a family comparison from becoming a fictional combined product. The reviewed model can be a strong aggregation choice with the correct optics and topology. If encrypted links or a different operating architecture are requirements, the exact alternative and its own constraints must be evaluated rather than appended to this SKU’s feature list.

Cartennas assessment

Shortlist 7520-48Y-8C-AC-F for a dense fiber role with a deliberate concentration ratio and the correct rack airflow. Treat the optical parts and recovery behavior as part of acceptance. If MACsec is required, move to the applicable model rather than assuming the E variant’s capability exists on this one.
