The fixed port set belongs in the higher-capacity part of the network

7720-32C provides 32 QSFP28 positions for 40G/100G operation. The AC-F bundle includes two AC supplies and six front-to-back fans. It is fundamentally different from a PoE access switch serving ordinary office devices.

The useful starting point is the number and role of the higher-speed connections the design requires. A large collection of ports can support several architectures, but it does not choose one. Campus core, aggregation and fabric roles have different expectations for routing, policy, failure recovery and management. The product should be compared within the intended role rather than across a generic list of fast switches.

The topology determines what the port total means

Thirty-two 100G ports represent 3.2Tbps of one-direction interface line rate, or 6.4Tbps when simply counting both directions. Those are arithmetic totals, not measured application performance. Ports assigned to peer links, fabric connections or other internal roles are no longer independently available for a different external purpose.

This is why the completed link map matters. The required workload must fit the surviving paths as well as the normal ones, and any lower-speed breakout use must follow the exact supported optics and software arrangement. A large headline can coexist with a poorly balanced design if too much traffic depends on a small remaining set of links.

The operating persona is an architectural commitment

Universal hardware allows a choice between Switch Engine and Fabric Engine. The selected persona determines the configuration and supported features. It should not be interpreted as all the functions of both systems operating together.

Administrator discussion around Extreme cores frequently distinguishes a fabric architecture from a traditional shared stack. That is the right level for this decision. The team needs an operating method it can understand during both change and failure, including the state kept on each device and the path traffic takes when one is unavailable. The hardware choice should support that method rather than substitute for it.

Power, cooling and management paths complete the system

The full AC-F suffix matters because the base model leaves the power and fan positions unpopulated and the AC-R alternative has the opposite airflow. The documented management interfaces also have different connections to the CPU and management controller, so the recovery plan needs the intended path rather than an arbitrary spare Ethernet lead.

Optical compatibility deserves the same specificity. Field reports from the related 7520 platform show that an initially working high-speed link can still fail to recover correctly with a particular optical part. That is family-adjacent operating evidence, not a measured 7720 defect. Its relevant implication is to qualify the complete link and recovery behavior in the chosen 100G topology.

Cartennas assessment

Choose 7720-32C-AC-F when a defined high-capacity topology needs its interface density and fits the selected Extreme operating model. Compare the completed link, optics and resilience design with alternatives. The port count is valuable only when those connections have a clear purpose and a supportable failure path.
