The industrial enclosure changes the selection criteria
JL817A is the twelve-port DIN-rail CX 4100i: eight access ports support Class 4 PoE and four support Class 6, with two SFP+ uplinks. The model is fanless and uses external industrial power supplies. Its role is to extend managed access into a cabinet whose conditions differ from an office communications room.
The mixed power classes make the port assignment consequential. A device requiring the higher class must land on a port that provides it. More importantly, having four higher-power ports does not establish that the selected supply can support them and every other endpoint at full allocation under all operating conditions.
Temperature can remove power capacity without changing the endpoint count
With the JL820A supply, HPE lists a 360W PoE budget below 50°C, falling to 320W at 60°C and 200W at 70°C. The ambient temperature relevant to that decision is the equipment’s operating environment, not a distant office thermostat.
Consider an illustrative 240W endpoint allocation. It fits the stated lower-temperature budget but exceeds the 70°C budget by 40W. Nothing about the number of connected devices has changed. The failure comes from designing against a rating that no longer applies inside the hotter cabinet. This is the central purchasing issue for JL817A: the power design must follow the environmental envelope as well as the endpoint list.
Two inputs provide redundancy, not an additive power pool
The supported dual-supply arrangement is redundant and non-sharing. HPE directs the configured PoE budget to follow the lower-capacity supply when two are used. Adding a second supply therefore does not justify summing their capacities as though they were one larger source.
That is a useful distinction for a remote industrial location. The benefit of the second input is its ability to maintain a supported load when one source is unavailable. Consuming capacity that only exists when both are counted together would defeat that intention. The selected temperature rating must remain valid for the surviving source as well.
New stacking capability has a specific topology and management scope
AOS-CX 10.16 introduced supported four-member VSF arrangements for the 4100i. Two-member rings are not supported; the guide describes bundled interfaces in a chain for link redundancy. Central on-premises 2.5.8 also uses templates or MultiEdit for this family’s stacks rather than UI creation.
These details show why the industrial switch should be evaluated with its software and management version, not only its enclosure rating. The stack consumes interfaces and creates a shared operating relationship between cabinets. Cartennas would use it where that relationship simplifies a defined topology, while keeping the power and temperature design local to each physical unit.

Choose JL817A when its industrial form factor solves a real environmental requirement. The purchase should be approved against the hottest operating condition and the surviving power source, not the largest wattage printed for the series. For a climate-controlled office rack, a conventional access switch may provide the required ports with a simpler power arrangement.
