The compact hardware fits a specific endpoint group
JL679A has twelve gigabit Class 4 PoE ports, two additional gigabit copper ports and two SFP+ uplinks. Its fanless design suits a room or small office where a conventional rack switch’s noise would be intrusive.
The SFP+ uplinks are useful when several local endpoints need to reach services elsewhere. They do not change the speed of an individual gigabit downlink. The model therefore fits a compact cluster with ordinary gigabit connections, rather than a group of multigigabit APs selected solely because the uplinks appear fast enough.
139W places a practical boundary on PoE density
The shared PoE budget is 139W. Four illustrative 30W allocations consume 120W, leaving 19W; five consume 150W and exceed the budget. The switch can have unused data ports while already lacking room for another high-allocation powered endpoint.
That calculation explains why this is a useful small-device switch rather than a dense power source. A mix of lower-draw phones and other endpoints can be a good fit. The conclusion changes when every connected device expects a substantial power allocation. Selecting the endpoint mix before the chassis avoids turning a quiet installation into a search for additional injectors afterward.
Older statements that CX 6100 cannot stack are no longer sufficient
The AOS-CX 10.16 VSF guide supports up to six CX 6100 members. Two-member rings are excluded, with bundled interfaces in a chain described for link redundancy. The Central on-premises 2.5.8 support matrix specifies a template or MultiEdit workflow for this family.
This gives the model a management option that older reviews may omit. It also consumes interfaces that might otherwise carry uplink traffic. The stack design must therefore consider both the desired shared management and the connections left available to the rest of the network. A new software feature does not create additional physical uplink sockets.
A recent field report shows the interconnect qualification problem
In April 2026, an operator using two JL679A units reported that third-party DACs were detected but would not form the intended 10G stack. Replacing them with working 10G multimode transceivers allowed the stack to form. That is a specific resolved interoperability experience, not a failure-rate measurement for the switch.
The result supports validating the exact interconnect before repeating a compact stack across sites. A cable being recognized is weaker evidence than the required topology operating successfully. Cartennas would keep the software version, stack configuration and tested optical parts together as one deployment choice. The JL679A’s quiet hardware and improved uplink options are useful, provided the power and interconnect limits are treated as part of the product decision.

JL679A is a strong fit for a quiet, modest-power access group with a reason to use 10G uplinks. Its newer VSF support increases flexibility, but the reviewed interconnect experience makes qualification of the complete stack worthwhile. Move to a larger or higher-power model when PoE demand or the required number of independent uplinks outgrows this compact role.
