The exact model does not power endpoints

R8Q67A provides 24 gigabit copper access ports and four 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks. It is the data-only CX 6200M model. The neighboring R8Q68A supplies PoE, but that capability should not be carried into this review merely because both are 6200M switches.

The distinction makes R8Q67A most relevant to endpoints that already have their own power source. A workstation access layer can fit that role well. A closet expected to power phones, cameras and APs requires a different model or a separate, deliberately designed power arrangement. A modular supply slot does not turn a data-only access port into PoE.

Modularity buys a service path

The chassis has two hot-swappable power-supply slots, with at least one separately ordered JL085A supply required. Its fan arrangement is also field replaceable. These components give the operating team a different response to a service event from replacing an entire fixed switch.

That advantage has value only when the rest of the service plan exists. A second supply can support an appropriate power-resilience arrangement; an available spare can shorten a repair. Empty slots and a future intention to buy parts provide neither. Cartennas would compare the complete configured system and stocked replacement parts with the cost of a simpler fixed model and a cold spare.

Front-panel stacking competes for uplink positions

The CX 6200M uses VSF rather than the rear stacking arrangement familiar from older Aruba 2930M deployments. Administrator discussion at the model’s introduction highlighted that change alongside the return of replaceable power supplies and an RJ45 console connection.

The useful consequence is physical: stacking and external connectivity must be assigned within the supported front-port design. Four SFP+ sockets are not four external uplinks after some have been allocated to stack links. The stack’s management benefit should be weighed against the remaining uplink paths and the capacity needed during a link failure.

AOS-CX offers continuity across the estate, with model-specific limits

The model includes dedicated out-of-band management and serial console options. Those can make remote investigation more practical when the production configuration is the subject of the incident. They do not remove the need for an independently usable management path.

The broader CX operating model also differs from earlier ArubaOS-Switch equipment. Existing scripts, port templates and recovery procedures need to be reviewed rather than carried across unchanged. R8Q67A is most persuasive when the team wants that operating model together with serviceable hardware, while its endpoints and topology remain within a gigabit data-access role. Buying it solely for the M suffix would miss the more important question of how the site will use and maintain those replaceable components.

Cartennas assessment

Choose R8Q67A for a data-only closet that will use its serviceable power, cooling and management arrangements. Prefer a PoE model when endpoint power is part of the job. Compare against a fixed 6200F when the operating plan relies on whole-switch replacement; the modular premium should purchase a real service capability.
