Five open slots create choices, not an installed port count
The CX 6405 v2 is a five-slot chassis platform. Its bundle provides the chassis infrastructure, management and fans, while line cards and power supplies must be selected for the required installation. The exact R0X26C v2 identity should stay attached to those compatibility decisions.
This is why a family headline is a poor substitute for a configured bill of materials. Different cards can turn the same chassis into quite different access or aggregation systems. Port density, available media and power demand follow the selected modules. A maximum quoted for the wider CX 6400 family should not be presented as the installed capability of an empty five-slot chassis.
Electrical capacity follows both the cards and the input arrangement
The chassis supports multiple modular supplies. Available PoE depends on the management modules, line cards, fans and power supplies in the configuration. The supply ratings and the required reserve must also match the site’s electrical input arrangement.
That makes the power decision inseparable from slot planning. Reserving room for another card is not enough if the electrical design cannot support its intended endpoints. Conversely, buying capacity that the site’s feeds cannot deliver provides little useful reserve. Cartennas would examine the populated and surviving configurations together: the one used on an ordinary day and the one expected to continue after a failure.
Internal redundancy and a second chassis protect different boundaries
Redundant components within a chassis address local component failures. VSX connects a pair through a distributed operating architecture. Those mechanisms should not be described as equivalent simply because both appear under high availability in a feature list.
An endpoint connected only to one chassis remains exposed to loss of that physical attachment, even when another chassis is healthy. Likewise, a second management module does not create a second independent cable path to the endpoint. The useful design identifies which failures each mechanism addresses and how traffic reaches the surviving infrastructure.
Maintenance behavior must follow the supported procedure
A technical community discussion about CX 6400 upgrades explored the distinction between dual-management-module ISSU and orchestrated VSX upgrades. It raised questions about combining the procedures; it did not establish a universal, automatically hitless upgrade result for every software and hardware combination.
The discussion is valuable because it exposes the operating question behind the redundancy diagram. More components and more upgrade features can also mean more conditions to understand. The selected release’s supported procedure, prerequisites and observed behavior in the intended topology matter more than a general high-availability label. This chassis is most convincing where a team can maintain that architecture over time, rather than where a large port count alone drives the purchase.

Request Installation SupportCartennas assessment
Shortlist CX 6405 v2 where its module mix and service architecture solve a campus requirement that fixed switches handle poorly. Approve the complete configuration and its failure behavior, including the endpoints’ physical paths. For a smaller installation, a simpler pair of fixed switches may be easier to operate; the chassis should justify its complexity through the actual design.
