The port mix is the reason to choose it
A network with copper-connected workstations and fiber-connected equipment often accumulates adapters, separate switches and additional uplinks. The M4300-24X24F puts both media types in one chassis. Its 24 copper and 24 SFP+ interfaces are independent, which makes the port count more useful than a design whose copper and fiber sockets share logical ports.
That advantage depends on the installed estate. A predominantly fiber network pays for copper interfaces it may never use. A new deployment moving toward 25Gb servers encounters a different limit: every production interface on this model tops out at 10Gb. Cartennas favors it when the mixed 10Gb requirement is already clear, rather than as an unspecified future core.
Powering the switch is separate from powering endpoints
The XSM4348S is a data switch, not a PoE access model. A camera or encoder requiring Ethernet power needs another power source or a different switch. The model-specific data sheet shows one APS250W supply installed and a second supply position blank; the second supply must be included in a design requiring power redundancy.
This distinction affects more than the order. Adding injectors creates additional plugs, heat sources and points of failure. For a rack of externally powered media equipment, that may be irrelevant. For ceiling devices whose only planned connection is structured cabling, it can invalidate the choice. The endpoint power map should precede the switch purchase.
Stacking needs its own bandwidth allocation
M4300 stacking uses production interfaces. Assigning ports to the stack therefore reduces the sockets available for equipment, and the chosen links must carry traffic that crosses between members. A large internal switching-capacity number cannot compensate for a small connection between two busy switches.
The useful calculation follows the traffic. If most copper sources send to fiber destinations on the same chassis, the physical arrangement can be efficient. If those destinations sit on another member, the stack links become part of every stream's path. Keep high-volume source and receiver relationships visible in the port schedule instead of spreading equipment merely to balance port counts.
Operating reports support the platform, with specific qualifications
An M4300 owner in a networking discussion reported years of stable use. A separate engineer documented configuring IGMP and MLD on an M4300-16X, including the querier and membership settings needed for reliable device discovery. That account also identified missing MLD group-table visibility in the firmware used at the time. These are useful family observations, not measured results for the larger XSM4348S.
Together they support a practical conclusion: multicast capability is valuable when the team can observe and maintain the resulting state. A stream appearing once is an incomplete acceptance test. Receiver joins, departures, a querier change and a switch restart reveal whether the service recovers consistently. An old firmware visibility complaint should prompt checking the current interface, not assuming that the limitation remains unchanged.
Where its value ends
For an established mixed 10Gb environment, replacing a working media plan solely to obtain a newer product name can add unnecessary work. For a new powered AV edge, the M4350-24X4V brings a materially different combination of multi-gigabit copper, PoE+ and 25Gb links. For dense optical aggregation, a 25Gb/100Gb platform avoids building tomorrow's backbone around today's 10Gb ceiling.
The M4300-24X24F earns its place when its unusual balance of copper and fiber removes equipment and simplifies an actual design. That is a stronger purchasing argument than a general claim that an AV-branded switch makes every multicast installation automatic.
