The case for a dedicated capture device
Ricoh specifies the fi-8170 at 70 pages or 140 images per minute, with a 100-sheet automatic feeder and a 600 dpi optical resolution. Its value is not simply that it feeds paper faster than an office multifunction printer. A dedicated station lets a scanning operator prepare and process batches without competing with another person's copy or print job.
That separation matters where incoming documents have to be indexed before the next business step can begin. A claims packet, personnel file or purchase record is not finished when the sheet leaves the rollers. It is finished when the right images, in the right order, are available under the right record. The fi-8170 becomes a stronger investment as the time lost to repeat handling and interruptions grows.
The independent speed results need their context
Two firsthand reviews point to useful performance without producing interchangeable numbers. A 2022 test reported more than 60 pages per minute with mixed documents and close to the rated maximum with more uniform material. A separate a published report evaluation completed a ten-page duplex test in 33 seconds and a single-sheet 600 dpi color duplex test in seven seconds.
The gap does not justify averaging those figures into one supposedly universal scan speed. They describe different jobs and methods. Short jobs contain proportionally more startup and processing time; resolution, image processing and output generation also affect when a file is ready. The correct inference is that the hardware can move substantial batches, while the buyer should measure completion using its own capture settings.
Even at the rated 70 sheets per minute, a 100-sheet batch would take about 86 seconds of uninterrupted feeding. That calculation excludes preparation and filing. Saving a minute in the scanner is valuable, but it cannot compensate for several minutes spent repairing an index or rescanning pages that were not checked.
Image quality is strong, but OCR is not a completeness guarantee
A published report found strong receipt, printed-text and handwriting image reproduction, with some very fine or light detail weakening under close inspection. Its OCR test missed a small number of words. Photo output was less faithful, including oversaturated blue and darker grayscale areas. These findings favor document capture over photographic reproduction.
An accurate-looking image and an accurate extracted field are separate acceptance questions. A scanned invoice can be legible while a single wrong character routes it to the wrong account. A missing page can pass unnoticed even when every captured page is sharp. The work process should therefore include page completeness and critical-field review instead of treating a successful OCR pass as proof that the record is correct.
For this reason, we would judge the scanner by the rate of usable completed batches and the time needed to resolve exceptions. A small improvement in repeat scans or manual correction can be more valuable than a higher raw feeder rate.
Networking changes the architecture, not just the cable
The fi-8170 supports USB and wired Ethernet, and the PaperStream ecosystem provides application-oriented capture. Ricoh also documents server-based operation with PaperStream NX Manager, including a Windows client-access licensing requirement for each scanner device or user.
A network connection therefore needs an explicit operating design. Decide whether the scanner is attached to a capture workstation, accessed through a supported network driver or used with server software. Those arrangements have different maintenance and failure boundaries. Adding Ethernet to the bill of materials does not decide who owns the capture software, where files are processed or what happens when that server is unavailable.
Ricoh's current driver documentation distinguishes operating-system paths. Qualify the real document-management application and its required driver interface, then preserve those versions and profiles with the station build. This is particularly important where a general demonstration utility works but the production application expects a different driver or a different process architecture.
Our recommendation
We would choose the fi-8170 for a department with meaningful daily scanning and a defined destination for captured records. Its combination of capacity, document-image quality and integration options is supported by both specifications and firsthand testing. For occasional receipts, the capability may be more than the work requires. For bound or fragile material, a flatbed path still needs to exist.
The decisive comparison is the cost of a completed, usable record. Include operator preparation, exception review, consumables and software administration. When those tasks are designed around the scanner, its speed can remove a bottleneck. When they are left unresolved, faster feeding mainly moves the queue to another part of the process.
