The strongest reason to buy it is control over the view
The G5 Pro records up to 3840 × 2160 at 30 frames per second and provides 3× optical zoom. Ubiquiti specifies a horizontal field of view ranging from roughly 110° at the wide end to 35° when zoomed.
That range is useful when the camera must concentrate on an entrance, passage or other defined area. Optical framing allocates the captured image to the selected scene before the recording is made. Cropping a broad view later cannot recover detail that was never captured.
The purchase case is weaker when the camera will remain at its widest setting and the site does not need the additional detail. Cartennas would identify the target area first, then determine whether the G5 Pro's optical range offers a meaningful advantage over a simpler camera.
Hands-on evidence supports good detail, with a clear limit
An independent G5-series evaluation installed the Pro in an office hallway and reported strong fine detail and useful optical coverage. The reviewer also described favorable low-light behavior with most office lighting switched off.
The same evaluation explicitly said the G5 Pro's position did not allow effective testing of its infrared night-vision range. Its favorable hallway result therefore should not be converted into a claim that a person can be identified at the maximum published IR distance.
This is a useful distinction for buyers. An indoor review can support an indoor detail assessment while leaving an outdoor, moving-subject requirement unresolved. The gap should be addressed with a site test, rather than filled with another model's night footage.
Owner experience separates detection from identification
A launch-era owner report described recognizable faces during the day but inadequate facial detail at about 40 feet after dark, despite the optional enhancer illuminating the area. Later comments from the same owner described improved detection coverage and more qualified results after adjustment.
That is one installation and an older software environment, not a measured failure rate. The report nevertheless identifies a relevant design issue: detecting that a person is present and obtaining an identifiable face are different outcomes.
Ubiquiti's published IR reach is 25 m without the enhancer and up to 40 m with it. Treat those as illumination figures. The required image should be tested with a moving subject at the actual distance, including the exposure behavior and lighting used in normal operation.
Power and networking are modest, but storage is a system decision
The camera has a 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet port. Ubiquiti lists maximum consumption of 10 W for the device and 12.95 W with the enhancer. The enclosure is rated IP65 with IK04 impact resistance, so mounting and environmental suitability deserve their own assessment.
A faster access-switch port does not make this camera's interface faster. The more relevant network questions are aggregate recorder traffic, the path used for remote review and whether power and connectivity remain available for the required period.
Retention depends on the actual recording settings and scene activity. Cartennas would size the Protect recorder and disks using the intended recording mix, then verify usable history and export behavior. Camera count by itself is an incomplete storage calculation.
The recommendation depends on the scene and the Protect operating model
The G5 Pro is a strong candidate when optical framing solves a real coverage problem and the organization benefits from a consistent Protect workflow. It should be assessed alongside the recorder, administrative access and the process for finding and exporting an incident.
For a demanding nighttime identification view, prioritize the mounting position and lighting before assuming that 4K or an enhancer is sufficient. A separate, tighter view may deliver more useful evidence than a brighter version of the same broad scene.
Cartennas recommends the G5 Pro for a demonstrated image requirement. Its optical flexibility is a concrete advantage; a promise of universal long-range night identification is not supported by the available evidence.
