A fair comparison starts with the application

The R760 and DL380 Gen11 can both host substantial enterprise workloads, but a chassis-to-chassis comparison is incomplete. Processor selection, memory population, storage path and adapters determine the system the application actually receives.

Cartennas would first specify the required capacity and service behavior. For virtualization, that includes memory per workload and the recovery arrangement. For a database, storage latency and licensing can be as important as processor count.

Only then should the competing quotes be compared. One can appear less expensive because it omits management features, uses a different storage architecture or leaves memory channels unpopulated.

Storage architecture can decide the build

Dell offers distinct direct-attached NVMe and hardware-RAID arrangements on the R760. That choice affects how the operating environment sees and protects the devices. It should follow the application's supported architecture.

The DL380 Gen11 also offers varied drive and controller arrangements, with physical tradeoffs between storage cages and expansion. A hands-on examination documented rear-drive options using space otherwise available to risers.

The practical comparison is therefore a diagram of the configured storage path, not a maximum-drive count. Confirm how the system boots, how application data is presented and which component replacement procedures the support team must perform.

The benchmark evidence does not produce a universal winner

An independent R760 test compared a dual-Gold configuration with a differently equipped R660. Different workloads produced different rankings. That demonstrates why a processor tier or chassis size alone cannot predict application performance.

The independently examined DL380 Gen11 configuration provided useful observations about internal layout and management, but it did not form a matched performance contest against that R760.

Cartennas would not combine those reviews into an invented score. They support a shortlist and expose configuration questions. A meaningful performance decision needs comparable workloads, software, resource allocation and enough repeated measurement to distinguish a real benefit from test variation.

Management differences become operating differences

The R760 fits an organization already using iDRAC and Dell fleet procedures. The DL380 Gen11 fits an established iLO and HPE environment. Familiarity can reduce deployment and incident effort when the required functions and entitlements are included.

In the HPE hands-on evaluation, Compute Ops Management identified a firmware-baseline difference and offered an update path. That is evidence of useful visibility. It does not establish whether a particular production application can tolerate the update or its reboot.

On both platforms, decide who owns the firmware baseline, remote console access and configuration records. A server's management interface is most valuable when the team can use it during a fault without first reconstructing credentials or responsibilities.

The newest generation is an alternative, not a slogan

An established platform can offer a compelling total cost when it matches the workload and the support environment. Newer-generation alternatives can offer a different balance of compute, power and expected service life.

The comparison should use the same delivered requirement on both generations. More cores may increase software cost without helping a memory-constrained workload; a cheaper older chassis may lose its advantage after the full support and expansion configuration is added.

Favor the R760 when its storage choices and Dell operating fit produce the stronger complete system. Favor the DL380 Gen11 when its configured expansion and HPE management fit do so. If neither offers compelling value against a current-generation design, broaden the decision rather than force a winner between them.

Cartennas assessment

Neither chassis wins in isolation. Compare workload-equivalent memory, storage, expansion, management and service configurations, then choose the platform the team can operate and recover at the better total cost.

Cartennas comparison of exact configurations, manufacturer documentation and available firsthand evidence; unmatched tests are not treated as a controlled ranking. Review methodology. Cartennas provides product procurement and onsite services. Product review terms.
