The most expensive mistake is choosing the hardware first
A counter terminal is where software, payments and staff workflow meet. The purchase is successful when a clerk can complete the sale, handle an exception and reconcile the result without creating a separate administrative problem.
Square Register and Clover Station Duo should therefore be compared through the business's actual transactions. Item modifiers, refunds, exchanges, receipt delivery and required integrations can matter more than a display specification.
Cartennas would establish that workflow before negotiating the terminal package. A device that looks inexpensive can become the costlier choice if it requires additional applications, creates manual reconciliation or depends on an unclear support relationship.
Keep the hardware generations straight
Square introduced the second-generation Register in February 2026. Its more recent hardware should not inherit every complaint made about the earlier Register, nor should a newer processor be assumed to have fixed an unrelated software problem.
Clover documents the original Station Duo separately from Duo 2. The customer-display size is one visible distinction, but the larger issue is procurement accuracy: the approved workflow and peripherals should match the actual model being supplied.
The comparison should identify the exact terminal, customer display, printer and other peripherals. Substituting a similar-looking package can change counter layout or accessory compatibility even when the sales proposal uses the same broad product family.
Clover's processing relationship is a material commitment
Clover states that its devices cannot be used with other payment processors. The merchant should evaluate the hardware together with the supported processing arrangement and the terms offered for that account.
The practical consequence is that ownership of a terminal does not create unrestricted freedom to move it to another processor. A business expecting that flexibility needs to resolve the limitation before buying, rather than count the hardware as a portable asset.
Square also needs to be evaluated as a complete payment and software relationship. Compare the actual recurring charges, required applications and business workflow on both sides. An equipment-only comparison omits the costs most likely to recur throughout ownership.
Outage handling requires more than an offline checkbox
The second-generation Square Register requires continuous external power. Its offline payment workflow can capture eligible payments during a connectivity interruption, but those payments still require timely upload and reconciliation under Square's rules.
That distinction matters at a busy counter. Connectivity loss, power loss and a malfunctioning reader are different events. An offline setting does not keep an unpowered terminal running or prove that a payment will ultimately be approved.
Evaluate the selected Clover arrangement with the same transaction sequence: what the clerk sees during the interruption, which sales can continue, what happens when service returns and who handles a failed or disputed result. Staff need a usable operating procedure, not just a feature name.
Support ownership is part of the product
Clover operating discussions include both merchants reporting difficult escalations and others describing satisfactory operation. One reported problem was resolved through an account contact after ordinary support attempts had failed. These are individual service experiences, not a Station Duo hardware failure rate.
The useful buying lesson is to identify who owns an incident spanning the terminal, account and an application integration. The merchant should not discover during peak trading that each support team considers the problem someone else's responsibility.
Favor Square when its selling and administration workflow matches the business with an acceptable payment arrangement. Favor Clover when the required software and supported processing relationship provide a better fit. In both cases, rehearse a normal sale and the difficult exceptions before making the platform a counter standard.
